The provincial capital Guiyang is situated in central Guizhou in a valley basin beside the Nanning River surrounded by a range of hills. It is the urban center of an otherwise rural and poor province. There has recently been a growth in economic activity in the city and the energy of the commercial district is a startling contrast to the worn buildings of the old district.
Guiyang has a population of just over 1 million including ethnic groups such as the Miao, Bou, Dong, Hui, Yi, Yao, Gelao and Sui. This diversity makes Guiyang a culturally interesting city to visit and there are many colorful and lively ethnic festivals and holidays throughout the year. There are also museums that celebrate the different cultures and traditions.
Guiyang is the starting point for exploring not only the many cultures, but also the outstanding natural beauty of Guizhou. The city is also home to China’s largest limestone complex, the Zhijin Caves, located 2-3 hours away.
There are flights to Guiyang from many major cities including Hong Kong, Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Kunming and Shanghai. |
