The mountainous province of Guizhou is bordered by Sichuan in the north, Hunan in the east, Guangxi in the south and Yunnan in the west. The province has amazing natural beauty - lush mountains, mystical limestone caves and awesome waterfalls. It is a culturally diverse province, 1/3 of China's ethnic groups live in this relatively unexplored landscape.

Guizhou is home to the largest limestone cave complex in China, the Zhijin Caves as well as the largest waterfall in Asia, the Huangguoshu Falls. This wealth of nature however belies the poverty of the province - Guizhou remains one of the poorest and most remote provinces in China. Guizhou is also known for its mild but wet weather, and a popular proverb encapsulates the character of the province - 'In Guizhou, there are no 3 days that are clear, no 3 feet of land that is flat, and no one worth 3 pieces of silver'.

Guizhou is also known for cultural diversity and there are more than 30 minority groups in the province. Because much of the province has not been heavily influenced by the effects of modernization and globalization, visitors have the unique opportunity to glimpse into a traditional lifestyle that has been lost in many of China's larger cities. Many enjoy visiting the ethnic communities found in Kaili.

Guiyang, the provincial capital of Guizhou is becoming increasingly urbanized, especially when compared to its rural neighbors.
