Changsha is located on the Xiang River in eastern Hunan, about 900km (560 miles) west of Shanghai. It is the political, economic, cultural and technological center of the province, and is one of the 10 most prosperous cities in China.
There is little sign in the modern city that Changsha has been a thriving community for more than 3,000 years. Much of the city was burned to the ground during fighting with occupying Japanese forces in the 40s and it has since been entirely rebuilt.
Changsha is best known for its links with Mao Zedong, who studied and taught in the city and from where he organized local peasant uprisings in the 20s. There are many places to visit for those seeking an insight into the life of the young Mao and the city visited by other revolutionary leaders.
Other attractions include the Mawangdui Han Dynasty Tomb and its 2,100 year old mummy, and the Provincial Museum. |
