Hunan Provincial Museum

Introduction

The Hunan Provincial Museum, found in the northeast of the city, contains an interesting display of archaeological finds. In 1972, grave sites from the Western Han dynasty (206BC-8AD) were excavated in Mawangdui, northeast of Changsha. The tomb and corpse of Xin Zui, Marquess of Dai, was surprisingly well preserved. All of the artifacts placed in the grave as well as the corpse, swaddled in 20 layers of silk and linen can be found on display.

One of the most fascinating finds from the tomb is a T-shaped silk picture, supposedly a banner for the soul. It is in extremely good condition and describes the voyage from the dead to the next world. The painting techniques and the color are of the highest quality.

Other exhibits at this museum include embroidered silk tapestries, paintings and lacquer-ware.
