Shaanxi province is located in the center of China and is considered to be one of the birthplaces of Chinese culture. The Wei River flows through the heart of the Shaanxi. In its fertile river basin archaeologists have uncovered evidence of agricultural communities who lived in the province over 6,000 years ago.
Xian is the capital of Shaanxi province and was the ancient capital of imperial China for over 1,100 years. The city is overflowing with historical sites and treasures including the incredible Terracotta Warriors. As the starting point for the ancient Silk Road, Xian is a superb gateway for a journey into China's rich past.
In contrast to the marvels of imperial China in Xian, the small town of Yanan played a key role in modern Chinese history as the headquarters for the Chinese communist party during the 30s and 40s. The sacred mountain of Huashan is close to the Shaanxi town of the same name. Xianyang is the site of more imperial tombs.
