Jilin lies in the center of northeast China, north of Liaoning and south of Heilongjiang. These 3 provinces make up the area once known as Manchuria, which is now known as Dongbei. Jilin also shares borders with Russia and North Korea.
As part of China's industrial heartland there is plenty of evidence of the effects of industrialization in this province. However away from the factory chimneys and cities Jilin has some little known areas of natural beauty. Close to the North Korean border, Changbaishan is a remarkable nature reserve. Listed by the UN as an area of special interest, this volcanic mountain range is home to many rare plants and animals.
Jilin is predominantly populated by Han Chinese however more than 2/3 of China's Korean ethnic minority live in the province. Korean influences can be seen in Changchun and Jilin City as well as in the Korean villages towards the border.
