Hebei is located on the North China Plain and borders the Bohai Sea in the east. It surrounds Beijing and has historically provided a summer retreat for the residents of the country's capital.
The Great Wall loops through the mountainous, remote north of the province, while the industrial south is more heavily populated. The eastern coastal towns of Baidaihe and Shanhaiguan, where the Great Wall meets the sea, are popular resorts in the summer months of July and August when the heat of the city rises dramatically.
Chengde was chosen by the emperor Kangxi in the 17th century as his summer retreat. Set in the Yunshan mountains on the Wulie river some 250km (155 miles) northeast of Beijing, he and his imperial successors built an elegant palace, hunting lodges and temple complex in the north of the city.
Other sites of note include the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) mausoleums near Beijing, the Shanghai Pass in the east of the province and the Congtai and Xiangshantang grottoes in the south.
