Zhangjiajie is located in northwest Hunan and had jurisdiction over Yongding and Wulingyuan prefectures and the counties of Cili and Sangzhi. The combined area totals over 9,560 sq km with a population of 1.5 million. More than 70% of the population comprise of the Tujia, Miao and Bai minority groups.
Famous for the beauty of it's many mountains and ravines such as Tianzishan and Suoxi Valley, Zhangjiajie is referred to as a "giant bonsai". The mix of forests, ravines, caverns, lakes, streams and cascades has long been the inspiration behind many traditional Chinese paintings.
The area is rich in flora and fauna - more than 3,000 types of plants grow in the region, among which 28 are under state protection. There are 550 tree species in the area, double that of Europe and include dawn redwoods and rare dove trees. 30 species of wildlife are also protected by the state. In 1992, UNESCO listed Zhangjiajie in the World Heritage Directory. |
