Lanzhou is situated in central Gangsu province, about 500km (310 miles) from Xian. The city stretches along the Yellow River at the head of the Hexi Corridor for almost 30km (19 miles) and has a population of about 3 million.
The city’s importance grew with the rise in trade between China and the west and it is now the leading industrial and population center of the northwest. Although set at the geographical heart of China, Lanzhou, with its many minority groups is culturally apart from the main eastern cities.
It is a bustling city with a modern downtown area, with western boutiques and fast food outlets, as well as more traditional markets and temples. The Yellow River flows through Lanzhou and boat trips are available. The Bingling Si Buddhist caves are a short taxi ride from the city.
Lanzhou remains an important transport hub and gateway to western China and Central Asia, and is easily accessible by rail and air.
