Luoyang lies in the west of Henan province, on the southern bank of the Yellow River, and 115km (71 miles) away from the capital, Zhengzhou. Luoyang is a city steeped in history. It became the capital of the Zhou dynasty in 770BC and later became the capital of the Wei, West Jin, North Wei, Tang, Post Liang and Post Tang dynasties and is often called the ‘Ancient Capital of Nine Dynasties’.
Among the famous sites found in Luoyang, there is the White Horse Temple, the 1st Buddhist temple founded in China as well as the Longmen Grottoes, a spectacular natural haven comprising caves, rivers, limestone cliffs and manmade statues and pavilions. |
