Shenzhen is in the southern coastal area of Guangdong province just north of Hong Kong. Since 1979, when it was designated an SEZ (Special Economic Zone), Shenzhen has developed from a sleepy farming village into one of the most modern cities in China
Today Shenzhen is a boomtown. It has excellent communications, modern housing, new highways, skyscrapers and an efficient airport. Shenzhen’s young population of over 2.5 million are drawn from all over China and have embraced the opportunities here with enthusiasm. Most visitors to Shenzhen have business at the top of their agenda and the city is primarily an energetic center for commerce.
In the last 10 years Shenzhen has been developing extensive tourist facilities to the west of the main commercial districts. Over half a dozen theme parks have been opened and are linked by a monorail. The miniature attractions of Splendid China and the diversity on display at China Folk Village are like a whistle stop tour of the Middle Kingdom.
Hong Kong residents flock over the border to Shenzhen for business and pleasure. Shopping and dining are cheaper and there are luxury hotels and golf courses to enjoy. Shenzhen offers a glimpse of the most modern side of China. |
