Xiamen is linked to the southeast coast of Fujian by a causeway and covers an area of 1,516 sq km. It has a population of about 1 million and is one the most attractive cities in China. The older parts of the city preserve architectural styles of a century ago while the modern port of Xiamen is growing fast.
The city was founded during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). The old Chinese and European style buildings in Xiamen date back to its time as a treaty port in the 19th century. At that time Xiamen was known to the world as Amoy and fortunes were made by the city’s traders. Foreign merchants were only permitted to live on Gulangyu island in Xiamen harbor. Gulangyu is a beautiful traffic free island where pastel colored old buildings add a charming mediterranean feel to this part of China. |
