Dalian is an attractive coastal city located at the southern end of the Liaoning peninsula. 5.3 million citizens live in an area of 12,600 sq km surrounded by the sea on 3 sides and the Nanshan mountain range to the north.
The coastal location moderates the extremes of the northeastern climate ensuring its port is ice-free all year round. Previously known as Qinzhou, the port of Dalian as it is today has only been in existence since the late 19th century when Russia and Japan fought and alternately had control of the area. Some evidence of Russian and Japanese architectural styles can be seen around Zhongshan Square.
As one of China's major ports Dalian is an important industrial and commercial center but is also surprisingly green. The city government has made concerted attempts to improve the city environment and its clean streets and air have gained international recognition. Dalian nearby beaches and beautiful countryside make it a popular summer resort. |
