Taiyuan is located in the center of Shanxi, close to the Fen River, about 450km (280 miles) southwest of Beijing. It lies at the heart of some of the richest coal and iron ore fields in the world and is the industrial powerhouse of the region.
More used as a stopover between Beijing and Xian or as a starting point for visits to the north of Shanxi, Taiyuan history is one of repeated occupation by invaders from the north and as a battleground for intra-Chinese conflicts.
Founded in 479BC and once a Tang dynasty (618-907) military stronghold, Taiyuan is now a thriving city with a modern downtown, especially in the highly developed Yingze Dajie area, which provides numerous hotels, banks and restaurants. |
