Baiju Monastery and Wanfo Tower
Built in the 15th century, Baiju Monastery is located in the city of Gyangze. It is a monastery that embraces all sects of Buddhism, which is rare in Tibet.
Construction of Wanfo Tower began in 1414 and took 1 million working days. Wanfo means 10,000 Buddhas. The 11 story tower is immense in proportion and has 108 doors, 77 Buddhist shrines and scripture halls. Covering an area of 2,200 sq meters at the base, the tower is 40 meters (130ft) tall. The interior walls of the tower are decorated with thousands of murals and scriptures with unique artistic features combining traditional Tibetan art with other countries’ artistic traditions.
