Dujiangyan Irrigation System
Dujiangyan Irrigation System was built over 2,000
years ago and is still important to Sichuan today. Prior to its
construction around 256BC, the Chengdu plain was prone to flooding
in the winter and drought in the summer.
Li Bing, the leader of the Shu Kingdom (220-263AD)
devised a system of weirs and channels which still water and protect
over 6,500 sq km of the plains to this day.
The project consists of three parts, the Fishmouth
Weir, Flying Sands Dam and Precious Bottleneck channel.
