Great Wall at Datong
Datong lies between an inner and outer section of the Great Wall. The outer section of the wall follows the north border between Shanxi and Inner Mongolia and a visit can be combined with a trip to the Yungang Caves. The inner section of the Great Wall acted as a secondary line of defence and is located 100km (62 miles) east of Datong near Hengshan.
320km (200 miles) away from Beijing, the Great Wall at Datong is not as well maintained as Badaling but its very remoteness makes it all the more awesome.
