Kai Yuan Monastery
Kai Yuan Monastery is located in the northwest of Quanzhou on Xi Street. First built in 686AD, it covers more than 30,000 sq meters and is one of the largest Buddhist buildings in Fujian province.
The temple has some impressive architectural features and decorative Chinese folk art. At the front of the temple there are 2 stone pagodas, which are more than 750 years old. The main hall, Daxiongbaodian, has 100 stone columns each beautifully carved with different designs. The cross beams are decorated with carved, flying celestial beings - singing, dancing or playing musical instruments. In the rear of the complex, there is a hall storing 37,000 volumes of major Buddhist scriptures.
