Hai River
A walk around the Hai River area reveals some of
the most interesting architecture in Tianjin. Britain and France
were granted concessions in Tianjin after the Second Opium War (1856-1860)
and established themselves beside the Hai River. During the late
19th century a number of other countries developed trade and concessions
in Tianjin which resulted in distinct mix of European style architecture
found in the area. In addition to the British and French concessions,
there were Belgian, German, Italian, Austrian, Russian and Japanese
concessions. Some of the most interesting buildings are located
on Jiefangbei Lu, which runs parallel to the river.
