On April 23, 1949, the People Liberation Army crossed the Yangzi to capture Nanjing from Kuomintang control. On the 30th anniversary of this event, a monument was erected on the southern bank of the river, northwest of the city to commemorate the victory. The Chinese characters on the monument are in Deng Xiaoping handwriting.
