Trip Grade: Moderate

The 24 different minority groups inhabiting the Yunnan province make this area one of the most colorful provinces of China. This trip takes you on an adventurous journey through some remote and stunningly beautiful areas of southern Yunnan. We raft along the Mekong River, explore some seldom visited areas in the south of the province and relax in the atmospheric towns of Dali and Lijiang. A beautiful trip through some of the China’s most beautiful areas - join us to share a unique adventure!

Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive Kunming

You can arrive at our joining point hotel at any time on Day 1 as there are no planned activities. Kunming is a rapidly developing city but there are still some great areas to explore and wow! The food is fantastic.

Day 2 Mojiang
Mojiang, a beautifully situated town in the lush, green south of Yunnan is just a bus trip away. Very few travelers reach this area and we have some free time to wander about. It's possible to take a short walk to some tea plantations at the back of a park.

Day 3 Simao
We take another bus trip along the windy roads of south Yunnan to reach the small, hidden and unexplored town of Simao. Here you are free to get out into the back streets to discover the town's interesting old buildings and hole in the wall restaurants.

Day 4-5 Mekong River Rafting
Rafting down the Mekong River, known as the ‘Lancang Jiang’ in China is definitely one of the highlights of this trip. If luck is on our side we may sight elephants along the way. We spend a night camping on the river banks and arrive in Jinghong in the afternoon of Day 5.

Day 6 Jinghong
Jinghong, the capital of Xishuangbanna Prefecture, is a laid back town with palm-lined streets. We have a full free day here to explore sites like the Topical Plants Research Institute, Chunhuan Park and the National Minorities Park.

Day 7 Homestay
A picturesque bus trip brings us to the sleepy village of Damenglong, close to the Myanmar border. We visit a temple and pagoda before enjoying a local style dinner and spending the night with a village family in their simple home. This is a unique opportunity to interact with the locals and learn about their way of life.

Day 8 Flight to Lijiang
After a local-style breakfast we say goodbye to our hosts and return to Jinghong for our afternoon flight to Lijiang in the north of the province.

Day 9-10 Lijiang - Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
Lijiang, home to the Naxi people (a matrilineal society descended from Tibetan nomads) is a serene and beautiful town and we’re lucky to stay in the atmospheric old quarter. The town’s backdrop is the 5,500 metre high snow-capped Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and we make a day trip out there, heading back for an optional attendance at a traditional Naxi dance and music performance.

Day 11-12 Old Dali
A short but spectacular bus trip takes us to Dali, a wonderful lakeside town surrounded by mountains that are snowcapped during the winter months. As well as exploring the town itself with its cobbled lanes and wooden houses you can visit the colorful early morning markets of the Bai people in surrounding villages.

Day 21 Kunming - Stone Forest
A half day bus trip brings us back to Kunming. On day 14 we make a trip to the famous Stone Forest, a large area with huge rock pillars in a forest like formation.

Day 21 Depart Kunming
You may depart at any time today.

Trip Grade Moderate
What it's like An adventurous trip for the traveler who wants to combine the relaxed mood of Yunnan’s atmospheric towns with plenty of opportunities for active excursions. There are some long traveling days through remote areas and along rough countryside roads. Travel in China can be frustrating and the cultural remoteness challenging. If you can travel with a sense of humor and a lot patience, then we think you - like us - will be captivated by what China has to offer.
Accommodation We stay in comfortable hotels for 2 nights and most nights in traditional, but basic guesthouses with limited facilities. One night is spent camping on a beach with tents on the Mekong (weather permitting) and there is also a basic village homestay where the accommodation is group share.
Meals No meals included, allow approximately US$150.
Transport We travel predominantly in local buses which can be a crowded experience, and take one short flight. The roughness of the raft trip along the Mekong River is dependant on water levels and seasonality - gentler options are available. There are plenty of active options for bike rides or short hikes.
Group Size 12 maximum
Notes 1. Allow US$100 cash for flights to be purchased en route. (Jinhong-Kunming)
