Most of the gardens were established over 400 years ago and follow traditional theories in design that seek to recreate landscapes in miniature and encapsulate the exquisite Chinese ideal of beauty. The 16th century Grand Canal also provides plenty of picturesque sightseeing opportunities.

Suzhou's gardens and canals can all be seen on a day trip from Shanghai as it's merely a 90 minute drive away, but we recommend more gentle exploration. Suzhou can also easily be combined with visits to nearby Hangzhou or Nanjing and is approximately 3 hours by plane from Beijing or Hong Kong.

Staying overnight in Suzhou lets you explore at a leisurely pace. An early start allows you to avoid the crowds that gather later in the day and to catch the beauty of gardens in the early morning light.

Start at the more famous gardens such as the Garden of the Humble Administrator, Tiger Hill and the Garden to Linger In. The serene beauty of the Chinese pavilions, lotus filled ponds and exquisite landscapes are best appreciated without the rush of the crowds and tour buses.

Get your daily workout by visiting Suzhou's towering landmark the North Temple. It is worth the 9 story climb for views of the city and a better perspective on the meld of ancient buildings and gardens with modern industry.

See the whole process of silk making from cocoon to qipao at the Suzhou Silk Museum or wander at your own pace through one of the tiny gardens tucked away at the city center. Lunch in one of Suzhou's small family run restaurants and relax by taking a boat ride on the Grand Canal for a memorable perspective of the city.
