Hainan
is a surprisingly different holiday destination - sun,
sand, golf, scuba-diving and more - on an island at
the southern most point of China.
A
thousand years ago Hainan served as a place of exile
for those who displeased the emperor. But with year
round sunshine, palm trees and long sandy beaches, it's
hard to imagine being sent to this laid back isle as
a punishment.

Hainan's
claim to be China's Hawaii distracts slightly from the
island's own unique charms. As a tropical island in
China with 1,500km (930 miles) of craggy coastline and
sandy beaches, Hainan has no real rival. Almost a third
of the island's residents are part of the Li minority
and visiting the traditional villages in the Hainan's
central hills is an interesting diversion from beach
activities.
Beaches
are surely the best thing about Hainan and Yalong Bay
is the longest and most beautiful. Find some quiet stretches
of sand to enjoy the simple pleasures of sunbathing
and swimming or head to the lively main section where
scuba diving, water ski-ing and fishing trips can all
be arranged.

Golf
Hainan's
year round mild climate makes golfers swarm to
this tropical paradise to practice their swing
on world-class golf courses. In Sanya, there is
the Yalong Bay Golf Club, designed by noted US
golf course designer Robert Trent Jones Jr and
also the Sanya International Golf Club. Other
courses include the Haiwang Nanyanwan Golf Club
designed by Bob McFarlane in Nanyan Bay and the
Lingshan golf course in Haikou.

With
