Classical
Chinese gardens epitomize a grand more serene way of
life and nowhere are gardens more beautiful than Suzhou.
UNESCO recognized the splendor of these ancient gardens
in 1997 when it made 4 of the city's 70 gardens World
Heritage sites.
Most
of the gardens were established over 400 years ago and
follow traditional theories in design that seek to recreate
landscapes in miniature and encapsulate the exquisite
Chinese ideal of beauty. The 16th century Grand Canal
also provides plenty of picturesque sightseeing opportunities.
Suzhou's
gardens and canals can all be seen on a day trip from
Shanghai as it's merely a 90 minute drive away, but
we recommend more gentle exploration. Suzhou can also
easily be combined with visits to nearby Hangzhou or
Nanjing and is approximately 3 hours by plane from Beijing
or Hong Kong. More...

Time to Go
Spring and fall are the most colorful and temperatures
are pleasant. During summer the lotus flowers are in
full bloom but the weather can be hot and hazy.

Nanjing
Nanjing
is one of China's most historical cities. Remnants
of its importance can be seen at the old city
walls built during Ming emperor Hong Wu's reign.
Nanjing however, is perhaps better known to the
world for tragic events during the 30s and World
War II. The Memorial of the Nanjing Massacre is
a poignant and important reminder for all. More

Hangzhou
Another major city on the eastern coast of China is
Hangzhou. Located at the southern end of the Grand Canal
and home to the fabulous West Lake, Hangzhou is one
of the most picturesque cities in China. Marco Polo
was torn between Hangzhou and Suzhou and described these
scenic cities as "Heaven on Earth". See both and decide
for yourself which is more heavenly. More
