Dali is a sleepy town in west Yunnan, nestling at the foot of Cangshen Mountain on the banks of Erhai Lake. It has a population of around 20,000 and its mellow atmosphere and spectacular lake and mountain scenery make Dali a tranquil but fascinating retreat.

The Bai minority people have settled mainly around Lake Erhai and had a major role in running Yunnan when Dali was capital of the province during the Nanzhao kingdom (738-902AD), and the Dali State (937-1253AD). Today the Bai people form most of the population of Dali, which adds to its unique character.

Much of old Dali was built in the 14th century and has narrow streets lined with traditional Bai stone houses. The oldest buildings in Yunnan, the Three Pagodas of Dali, are just outside town and are built from local marble, which is still quarried around Dali today.

There are daily flights connecting Dali to Kunming, which is 400km (248 miles) away. Alternatively the road journey between the two cities takes a day but provides splendid views of the Yunnan landscape.
