The capital of Yunnan province and the largest city in southwest China, Kunming is situated at an altitude of 1,800 meters (6,500ft) in the central area of the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau. Its elevated location ensures a mild climate and the year round average temperature of 18°
C (65°
F) has given rise to the name "City of Eternal Spring". For the visitor, this means that Kunming is in bloom all year and a year round destination.
Despite a population of almost 4 million, Kunming retains a relaxed and quiet atmosphere. Modern stores and buildings line the wide clean main thoroughfares but only a few streets away you can discover traditional Yunnan style houses, built from wood with grass growing from the roofs. Traditional temples, pavilions and gardens are scattered through the city for gentle walks and exploration. Just south of Kunming lies Dianchi Lake, the 6th largest lake in China and within a few hours drive you can visit some spectacular sights of great natural beauty.
Kunming’s restaurants allow you to sample the unique flavor of Yunnan food plus a good selection of international fare. Nightlife is mainly centered at some of the hotels’ bars and nightclubs, but a few lively bars are tucked away in the side streets. A modern airport and good road connections make Kunming a convenient starting point for discovering the diversity of Yunnan province, but its own charm and attractions warrant a few days of exploration.
