Located 7km (4 miles) southeast of the city of Dengfeng, the Gaocheng Observatory was established in 1279 by the famous astronomer Guo Shoujing. It is the oldest observatory in China and is architecturally an interestingly shaped building. Visitors can climb to the top of the 10 meter (33ft) building to view the surrounding area.
