Sun Yatsen Memorial Hall

Introduction

Sun Yatsen (1866-1925), father of republican China, was born in Guangdong. This memorial hall was built in 1931 with funds contributed by overseas Chinese and the residents of Guangzhou. It was built on the site of the presidential house where Sun Yatsen had lived in when he was the provisional president of China in 1922. This palatial octagonal structure is 47 meters (154ft) high and covers 12,000 sq meters. The rotunda and the blue-tiled roof were modelled after the Temple of Heaven in Beijing.

Inside there is photographic tribute to Sun’s life as well as an auditorium which can seat 4,700 people. An impressive bronze statue of Sun Yatsen stands at the front of the Memorial Hall.
