Shanghai Museum

(shanghai bowuguan)

The Shanghai Museum moved to its current site at the People’s Square in 1995. This urn-shaped building is one of the most impressive new structures of the city. Inside, the museum houses a comprehensive collection of some of China’s finest relics and artifacts - paintings, bronzes, sculptures, ceramics, calligraphy, jade, imperial furniture, coins, seals and minority art.

The bronze collection, which dates from the 17th to 14th century BC is said to be among the best in the world. The museum also has live demonstrations of ancient pottery making techniques. An excellent art library is also located here, but you must call ahead to arrange an appointment. The museum shop offers antiques as well as quality reproductions.
